Four Keys to Your Child’s Dental Health

  • Help your child brush his or her teeth twice daily, from the eruption of the first tooth until their seventh birthday, using a small pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Continue supervising throughout their elementary school years. Around the time of their third birthday, you should introduce flossing at least 2-3 times per week in order to clean between the teeth.
  • Minimize soda pop and other sweets especially in young children. The enamel on baby teeth is very thin making them susceptible to dental decay when frequently exposed to sugars.
  • Wean your child off the bottle by their first birthday. If children request a drink at night, only allow water. Other liquids including milk, juice, or soft drinks in a bottle or “sippy cup,” bathe the teeth throughout the night in sugars causing cavities, which can lead to baby bottle tooth decay.
  • Visit the dentist every 6 months for routine exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Early detection of small cavities allow conservative small fillings rather than large restorations or extractions.
